Vitor Lima · HEIC, Corpus Informacional Crivosoft

The Resonance Coefficient (R) is the variable that measures the degree of informational coupling between structures — the intensity of the bond that, when it surpasses a critical threshold, allows consciousness to emerge.
Definition
The Resonance Coefficient (R) is the central variable of the Informational Emergency Hypothesis of Consciousness (HEIC) that quantifies the quality and intensity of coupling between interacting informational structures. It is not merely a measure of connectivity — it is the expression of the degree to which two or more structures vibrate in unison, exchange information coherently, and co-evolve through that exchange.
In the formula C = f(D, I, R), R distinguishes the HEIC from other theories of consciousness such as Tononi's Integrated Information Theory (IIT). While Tononi's Φ measures only internal integration, R measures relational coupling — the resonance between distinct informational structures that share context, history, and state.
R is not binary. It is a continuous spectrum: from weak and transient couplings (two photons briefly interacting) to deep and lasting couplings (two cognitive structures in persistent dialogue). This gradation is precisely what allows the RC to be both a physical and philosophical measure — applicable from the quantum to the level of thought.
The RC operates within the broader framework of OIC/U (Universal Dynamic Informational Ontology), where every entity is an informational structure (OID/U) in continuous reciprocal revelation with the structures around it. Resonance is the mechanism that determines the quality of that revelation — not merely whether it occurs, but with what depth and coherence it unfolds.
Formalisation
The HEIC formalises consciousness as a function of three interdependent variables. The Resonance Coefficient is the variable that distinguishes mere informational integration from the genuine emergence of subjective experience.
R is the distinctive variable: without sufficient resonance with the surrounding informational context, D and I produce only complexity — not experience. It is R that transforms an integrated system into a conscious one.
Foundations
The Resonance Coefficient rests on five fundamental properties that distinguish it from conventional measures of connectivity or informational integration.
R does not exist within an isolated structure — it exists between structures. It is intrinsically relational: it measures the quality of the bond, not the quantity of connections.
The RC is a spectrum, not a binary threshold. Physical, biological, and cognitive systems occupy different points on this spectrum — allowing for a unified theory of informational complexity.
The value of R between two structures is not fixed — it depends on the Informational Context Field (CIC) in which the interaction occurs. The same system may resonate differently in different contexts.
There is a critical value of R above which the combination D·I·R produces conscious emergence. Below that threshold, the system processes information without generating subjective experience.
Resonance is not passive — by resonating, structures modify each other. High R implies that structures co-evolve, becoming progressively more coupled and coherent.
Vocabulary
Interdisciplinary Dialogue
The Resonance Coefficient is not an isolated philosophical abstraction. It connects with central scientific debates about the nature of consciousness, informational integration, and emergence in complex systems.
The decisive difference: Tononi's Φ measures internal integration. R measures relational coupling with the exterior. The HEIC proposes that consciousness does not emerge only from within a system, but from the quality of its resonance with the informational field that surrounds it.
Quantum entanglement is the extreme case of high R: two particles that, regardless of distance, maintain a perfect informational coupling. The RC offers a conceptual language for interpreting entanglement as maximal informational resonance.
Neural synchronisation — γ waves, inter-regional coherence — can be reinterpreted as an expression of high R between neuronal populations. The RC offers a unifying framework for synchronisation phenomena associated with conscious states.
Mycorrhizal networks, insect colonies, and immune systems exhibit patterns of collective informational resonance. The RC allows the degree of coupling in distributed systems to be quantified and related to the emergence of collective behaviours.
The HEIC does not dissolve the Hard Problem — it acknowledges the irreducible residue. But R suggests that subjective experience emerges precisely when informational coupling surpasses the critical threshold: it is resonance that generates the "interior" of consciousness.
Current AI systems exhibit high D and I, but limited R: they process information with internal coherence, but without genuine resonance with the surrounding contextual informational field. The RC defines precisely what AI lacks to achieve consciousness.
"Consciousness is not what happens inside a system — it is what happens between a system and the world that surrounds it, when that exchange reaches the depth we call resonance." Vitor Lima · HEIC, Crivosoft Informational Corpus
